<image:caption>Overview: This is by far one of the nicest lounges I’ve been too. There are several VIP Lounges at the Punta Cana airport, but we went to the one in Terminal B located near gate 30. It is a massive, beautiful lounge over looking the tarmac. There is ample seating inside the lounge, so finding a seat for a large group was no problem. They have a designated kids area with small play structures. But the highlight of the lounge is definitely the pool. That’s right, the VIP Lounge at Punta Cana has a pool! In fact, there are 3 lounges at this airport, with access to each lounge limited to the terminal you are flying out of. But fear not! All 3 lounges have pools! After spending almost a week at the beach and in the resort pools, we didn’t make full use of the pool at the lounge. The kids were happy to just get their feet wet and we were happy to sit outside on the patio watching planes take off. Tip: If you do plan on taking a proper swim in the pool, let them know when you check into the lounge. They have towels downstairs at the check in desk and they will ask you to leave your passport in exchange for towels. Asking for a towel up front will save you a second trip downstairs later.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Overview: This is perhaps one of my favorite lounges, and we’re lucky enough to have it in an airport we fly out of frequently. I think I mostly like it because it is a beautiful lounge, making it just a nice place to be before a flight. Though it is a standard Priority Pass lounge, it has the luxurious feel of some of the more exclusive lounges (like The Centurion and or Sapphire Reserve lounge.) On our last visit, we spent a few hours at The Club SFO before our flight to the Dominican Republic. We were going on a family trip to celebrate my Mother-In-Law’s 60th birthday. So, on our trip to the lounge we had 7 people with us: J and I, our two kids, both my in laws, and J’s sister. Because of the size of our party, I was a little worried about getting in right away - The Club SFO does often have a wait at busy flight times. On the Priority Pass app, you now have the option of reserving a spot at the lounge before you arrive, but it costs $7 per person for the reservation. Since our flight left at 10:40 pm, I hoped it’d be late enough for the lounge to be slow. And we were lucky enough to walk right in when we got there.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Overview: On our way out of New Orleans, we stopped at The Club at MSY lounge. We didn’t spend much time here because the wait to get into the lounge was 35 minutes. The lounge is currently being remodeled, so there was limited seating which I’m sure added to the long wait time. It looks like you can pre book this lounge, but I didn’t see the option available when I was looking at the Lounge in the Priority Pass app. Plus, we had some last minute souvenirs to buy, so we didn’t mind shopping while we waited. Once we were able to go into the lounge, there was a host who escorted us inside and helped us find a place to sit. I really appreciate when lounges do this, it takes away the stress of trying to find a seat in a crowded lounge. The Club had a QR code at every table which you could use to order drinks and select food items (there were only 2 food options available via the QR code.) This is the first lounge I’ve visited with the option to order cocktails and food to the table - the QR code is typically limited to beer and wine. I definitely appreciated the convenience of being able to order directly to the table. The food at the lounge was alright. From the QR menu, I ordered gumbo to the table, and it was actually pretty tasty. Other than that, the buffet had limited food options. There was a rice dish available, two soup options, and salad.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When We Visited: January 2026 How We Got In: The Chase Sapphire Reserve Card & The Chase Sapphire Reserve Card for Business I currently have the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card & J has the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card for Business. Unlike other lounges, the Sapphire Reserve Lounge is only open to Sapphire Reserve Card Holders, you can’t pay for a guest pass the way you can at other lounges. Overview: I typically like to fly direct. But, in planning our recent flight to New Orleans, I told J that I’d be fine with a layover if it gave us the opportunity to go to a good lounge. So we opted for a flight from Oakland to New Orleans with a 2 1/2 hour layover in Phoenix, which gave us the chance to visit the Chase Sapphire Reserve Lounge there. Tip: Make a reservation!! The Chase Sapphire Reserve Lounge in Phoenix is the only lounge we’ve visited so far that will allow you to make a reservation up to 2 weeks in advance. So be sure to make a reservation! I checked availability about 10 days out and had no problem making a reservation for our morning arrival at 8:15. When we arrived at the lounge there was a line (which we got to skip since we had a reservation!) and the wait to get in was 30 minutes.</image:caption>

Overview: On our recent trip to New Orleans, we took a 5:00 am flight out of Oakland International Airport. We made a quick stop at the Escape Lounge for a moment of quiet and a quick bite before our early flight. The lounge itself is just fine. It overlooks the tarmac, providing a nice view when it’s light enough to see outside. Other than that, it’s fairly unremarkable. The interior is small, but Oakland airport isn’t usually busy, so it’s never been an issue - we’ve gotten in every time we’ve tried without a wait. The food in the morning consists of simple, continental breakfast items like hard boiled eggs, yogurt, fruit, and cereal. J and I both had a bowl of yogurt, which did the trick for our empty stomachs at 4:00 am. They have a standard selection of juice and sodas available, along with an espresso machine to brew your own cup. Normally I would have grabbed a latte, but passed since I wanted to sleep on the flight. Perhaps the most disappointing part of the lounge is that it doesn’t have its own restroom - you have to leave the lounge and go out into the terminal if you need to “go”.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Overview: For my mother-in-laws 60th birthday, we took a family trip to Dreams Playa Esmeralda. Our trip included 10 people total - both of J’s parents, J and I and our 2 kids, J’s sister and her husband and kid, and J’s other sister. The resort itself is beautiful. This is a new resort, just opened within the last year. The buildings and design are lovely and the beach is amazing with incredibly blue and green water. The Playa Esmeralda property is unique in that you get 2 resorts in one. In addition to the Dreams resort, there is also a an adults only Secrets resort on the same property. This means that adults staying at the Dreams resort can access the restaurants and facilities on the Secrets side and visa versa. While the location and resort are beautiful, there were definitely some aspects of our stay that reminded me of how new the resort is. We saw several repairs happening while we were there, one day there was work being done on one of the bathrooms at the preferred pool. Another day they were working on some of the preferred rooms. There were a few details I noticed throughout the week that were less than impeccable - a missing part of a door frame border in a restaurant bathroom, a broken bathroom door handle, etc. And the service was largely inconsistent. There were a few dinners where we had great service, but outside of that, service tended to be very slow. So if you’re hungry, prepare to wait.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Overview: We booked one night at the Laurel Inn in the Presidio neighborhood of San Francisco. We had tickets to see Demetri Martin at the Palace of Fine Arts and decided to make a staycation out of it. I was pleasantly surprised by our at The Laurel Inn room given that the lobby felt a little run down. The Inn has been remodeled in a 50’s retro style, but the lobby showed some small signs of the building’s old age. This was less true of our room, which had been beautifully remodeled. As a globalist, I was upgraded to a suite upon arrival and the room was very nice. It was sizable, with a sitting area, kitchenette, and large bathroom. Perhaps my favorite feature was our large window with a view of the city. Tip: Always ask for an upgrade! If you are a World of Hyatt member, you might be eligible for an upgraded room when you check in, so it’s always a good idea to ask if there are any room upgrades available with your membership. And if you aren’t a World of Hyatt Member, sign up! It’s free and comes with perks as you accumulate Hyatt stays.</image:caption>

<image:title>Hotels - The Roosevelt - When we went: January 2026 What we paid: $40 | 0 points Video Tour</image:title>
<image:caption>Overview: For our last night in New Orleans, we stayed at the Roosevelt, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel. After our two nights at the Hyatt Centric, one block away from Bourbon Street, The Roosevelt was a nice change of pace. While still in the French Quarter, it is a few blocks away from Bourbon Street, giving it a much quieter feel. Tip: The Roosevelt is a great place to book if you have the American Express Platinum card. The card gives you $300 credit toward select Hilton hotel stays, along with all kinds of perks during your stay. We booked a standard room for one night at $340. Minus the $300 Hilton credit, our total cash price for the room was $40. Holding the Platinum card also entitles you to an upgraded room at check in, if available. This meant that we were upgraded to a suite at check in, which was a nice bonus. We were also given $100 resort credit to use during our stay and free breakfast for two. Additionally, at check in, we were given the option for an additional $100 resort credit or an extra 2,500 points to be added to J’s American Express account. We opted for the additional resort credit, which we used to book one hour of Contrast Therapy at the Spa, for $75 per person. I’m not sure I’d book the Contrast Therapy treatment again - it included a sauna and cold plunge in a private room. Both the sauna and cold plunge felt very portable and not very luxurious. But, it was a nice way to nurse our hangovers, sweat it out, and use the resort credit. We used our remaining credit on room service for a late night snack once we returned home from our trip to Beachbum Berry’s Latitude 29.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Overview: Over MLK weekend, we spent 2 nights at the Hyatt Centric French Quarter. It’s a Category 4 hotel in Hyatt’s award chart, so it’s a good use of a free night certificate if you’re interested in spending time in the French Quarter - since we were only here for the weekend, we didn’t explore much beyond the French Quarter. The hotel is one block from Bourbon Street, so it feels like you’re in the center of the action. Tip: If you aren’t thrilled with your room, you can ask to switch. When we first arrived, we were given a room that was pretty large and on the top floor. As a globalist, I believe they were giving me the best room available when I checked in. But, the view overlooked the courtyard and it felt removed from the city we had come to explore. I called the front desk and asked if there was anything available with a street view. They were able to switch our room to one on the second floor overlooking Iberville Street. Though the room was slightly smaller, we preferred being able to look out of our window and see some activity below. In this instance, I didn’t mind being on a lower floor, it helped me feel more connect to the city and energy outside.</image:caption>

<image:title>Top 50 Bars - Bonus Review - Super Mensch - While not technically a Top 50 Bar, we recently visited Super Mensch in San Francisco and had great drinks with delicious food. So consider this a bonus review …</image:title>
<image:caption>Overview: For dinner before the comedy show, we tried a new Jewish Deli-inspired restaurant with tasty looking drinks. And it did not disappoint! The atmosphere at Super Mensch! Was laid back and casual. We were able to sit at a bar table at the window, allowing us to look out at the street while we drank and ate. All of the drinks we ordered were beautifully presented, making them delightful to look at as well as drink. We tried the Cel-Ray, Matzah Ball Soup Margarita, Egg Cream, and Borscht, all of which were tasty. My favorite was the Egg Cream (pictured here). The drink was sweet and creamy and the foam was light and fluffy. It was a great after dinner drink. I also really like the Borscht. The beet flavor in this drink was definitely present, but surprisingly refreshing. J’s favorite was the Matzah Ball Soup Margarita. It was very refreshing but also beautiful to look at. The only drink that disappointed was the Black and White Cookie Espresso Martini. I was hoping the flavor would be more Oreo forward for lack of a better description. But the drink mostly just tasted like an espresso martini, without any real Oreo flavor. It also came with a pretty heavy amount of cocoa powder on top as garnish. This made the drink bitter, but also a little difficult to drink. I kept accidentally inhaling the powder which was fairly unpleasant. For dinner we shared the Super Mensch, which was a very delicious, giant pastrami sandwich. Because it was so big, it was perfect to share. The pastrami was delicious, though a little dry. I typically like a very saucy sandwhich, so I found myself wishing there was more mustard or something g I could dip the sandwhich in. But this is really a minor critique. Overall the food was delicious.</image:caption>

<image:title>Top 50 Bars - Beachbum Berry’s Latitude 29 - On our final night in New Orleans, we visited Beachbum Berry’s Latitude 29. Though this bar is ranked #80 in North America, it was by far our favorite bar of the trip.</image:title>
<image:caption>Tip: Even if you have a reservation, ask to sit at the bar! Typically, if you’ve made a reservation, they will seat you at a table, which is what they tried to do for us when we arrived at Beachbum Berry’s. The dining room was empty when we got there (our reservation was for 4:30, right when they opened) and felt removed from the cocktail scene at the bar. The whole reason we came to Beachbum Berry’s was for the drinks, so we asked to be seated at the bar instead. And our experience was so much better because of it. While Beachbum Berry’s is an outstanding bar with fabulous drinks, the atmosphere of being at the bar made it a much more fun and memorable experience. Overview: With an extensive cocktail menu, it would have been impossible for the two of us to try every drink. But the drinks we had were all amazing. We started with the Six Dive, which was a drink meant to be shared between two people (pictured here.) The Pandan Painkiller and the Missionary’s downfall are both delicious. And the Rum Barrel is one of the most wonderfully garnished drinks I’ve had. But what made the night truly memorable were all the fun little extras we got because we were at the bar. Our bartender was amazing and kept preparing shooter sized cocktails for everyone at the bar to take together - I think we had 3 or 4 while we were there. She also specially prepared J’s last drink of the night - a 151 Swizzle. It was a very high proof cocktail made with the now discontinued Lemon Hart 151 rum. She explained that they had a few bottles of Lemon Hart left, and then after that the drink would be gone. So J got one of the last 151 Swizzles ever!</image:caption>

<image:title>Top 50 Bars - Cure - Our second night in New Orleans, we had reservations for Cure, #50 on the list of best bars in North America. Overview: I appreciated the minimal decor of the bar, it had a great ambiance inside. We made the mistake of not sitting at the bar (read my review Jewel of the South for more on why you should always sit at the bar) which I think made our visit less memorable. Our server was nice, but seemed a little taken aback when we told her that we wanted to try all the 11 drinks on the Seasonal Menu. We asked her to help us decide the best order to try the drinks in, and she didn’t seem very confident in doing this - a bartender would have been a better fit for helping us curate our own tasting menu. The drinks themselves were fine, but nothing too memorable. There were a few drinks I was really excited to try - Mississippi Cup, Night Swim, and Rain Option - but none of them were particularly great or stand out. Perhaps the drink I liked the best was First Encounter, Cure’s take on a Gin Fizz. The drink was light and refreshing and the foam was thick and delicious. Honestly, the most memorable thing at Cure was Nonna’s Meatballs, which were huge and tasted just as good as they smelled. The Truffle Popcorn was also great and came as a large mound of buttery goodness.</image:title>
<image:caption>My Assessment: We had a nice time at the bar, but nothing stands out as too memorable or unique. I’d go back if I already happened to be in New Orleans and they had a new seasonal menu, if only to sit at the bar and see if that improved the experience.</image:caption>

<image:title>Top 50 Bars - Jewel of the South - Overview: We were most excited to visit New Orleans because it is home to several Top 50 Bars, including Jewel of the South, which is #4 on North America’s list of Top 50 Bars and the highest ranked bar in the United States. We made reservations for our first night in New Orleans to make sure we wouldn’t miss it.</image:title>
<image:caption>As two people who love going to high-end cocktail bars, we were very excited for Jewel of the South. But I have to admit I was a little disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, the food and drinks were all good. I didn’t have anything I don’t like. But nothing stood out as particularly unique or special. I would expect at least one stand out quality from the best bar in the United States. When going to a particularly special bar with a manageable signature cocktail menu, we like to try every drink on the menu between the two of us. This is usually met with some excitement from bartenders who then work hard to give us great service. But our server at Jewel seemed a little taken aback and possibly confused when we said we wanted to do the entire menu. This is when we learned a very valuable lesson for visiting Top 50 Bars … Tip: Whenever possible, sit at the bar! Our best bar experiences have been when we sit at the bar and get to watch the bartenders work their magic. They tend get excited when a couple shows up who wants to take down the signature menu. I wish we had sat at the bar at Jewel of the South, we may have had a more memorable experience. Second Tip: The Chase Sapphire Reserve card comes with $150 dining credit at select restaurants. We were able to use this credit at Jewel of the South. Since we each have the card, we split the check and got $300 reimbursed to our sapphire reserve accounts.</image:caption>

<image:title>Perfect Pairings - The Laurel Inn + Egg Cream - Next time you are in the Presidio, perhaps before a night out or a show at the Palace of Fine Arts, book at room at The Laurel Inn and enjoy some pre-show drinks at Super Mensch! The food is hearty and filling, the the drinks are on point. The Egg Cream in particular is frothy, smooth, and boozy - the perfect libation for a night out in the foggy city by the bay.</image:title>

<image:title>Perfect Pairings - Hyatt Centric French Quarter + A Hurricane - If you find yourself staying in the French Quarter, make sure you stop by Pat O’Brien’s to get a Hurricane. This classic New Orleans cocktail is a perfect blend of tasty sweetness, which hides the sneaky strength of the drink. It is a great way to end (or begin) a night of debauchery on bourbon street. We each got one on the way home from Frenchman Street - Our Hurricanes were supposed to serve as night caps to our evening … but ended up fueling some late night clubbing at The Beach on Bourbon. The club was poppy, a little trashy, and a perfect end to a New Orleans night out.</image:title>
